Jono’s Corner

Keep scrolling into the deep dark reaches of the Datascope newsletter and you will find the true gold, the content we all want; Jono’s corner. You might have been wondering where I went but don’t worry, I was just at a silent meditation retreat recapturing my inspiration. Being silent for 3 months awoke me to the importance of sound, music and positive vibrations, man. I had to rush back to my team and ask them to give me their most memorable/favourite use of sound or music in a game. Here is what they gave me:

David – SSX Tricky – RUN DMC-“It’s Tricky”
Picture this, you’re 12 years old. Saturday. Can of coke in hand and a half packet of Haribo, as it’s before dinner. You lock in the most iconic snowboarder of a generation, Eddie, and select Tokyo Megaplex. You know it will only be a few moments before you hear the sweet soft voice of RUN DMC confirming what you already knew; that you’re the best virtual snowboarder that your PS2 memory card has ever seen. Bliss.

Jonathan – GTA San Andreas – Into Music
I’m still in my school uniform, I run straight to my PS2 and power on. San Andreas starts, I hear the shake of the aerosol can, the spraying of the paint and then the sickest beat to ever be used on a game intro plays. Time to play.

Kane – Halo – Menu Music
The ‘ohh ohh ohh’ menu music always got me pumped to play: https://youtu.be/AbonVshOLf0
Lucas – Read Dead Redemption 1: Jose Gonzalez -“Far Away”
When this played it made the transition into Mexico a breath-taking experience. Intense feels.

Madeleine – The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
After the forest dungeon, there is a scene where the little koroks put on their annual song ritual. It always sticks into my mind and the song is really upbeat and cheerful. It’s such a good feeling after beating a dungeon to see this little scene!

Mahyar – Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus – End Music
I remember the intense feeling of relief after beating Wolfenstein II I felt when the music came in at the end. I thought about the battles I’d been through, the journey.

Natalie – IRL
I prefer my own soundtrack. Especially listening to audiobooks.

Stefan – City Connection
My most memorable is the soundtrack from City Connection; a platform Arcade game by Jaleco in 1985. I spent an entire summer and tons of 20c pieces in an attempt to clock this game. The tune still entertains me to this day!

Yasmin – Nowt
I don’t even listen to the sound fx in games so I’ve got no idea!

Training Manager’s blog

One step more than just sending a CV…

In my 3 years working at Datascope I have spoken to and met with numerous clients and the one thing they can all agree on; when applying for a job make sure your portfolio is up-to-date.

Whether you are an Artist, Designer or a Programmer, always have some examples of your work ready to go that is up-to-date and a good display of your current ability.

If you are just starting out then consider putting together something where you can showcase your abilities and skills. Take some time to add some polish and, where necessary; a brief explanation of why you chose the approach you did.

If you need some advice don’t be afraid to reach out to us; we are here to help after all.
