Games have always been an escape for me, ever since I picked up my first PS1 I have been spending hours of my life in different worlds and more importantly, as different people. Characters are the driving force of any story and an essential component of any successful game. Now I will hold up my hand and say I often cry at films, but at the movies we’re only with a character for 2 hours – that’s nothing compared to the journey we take with our favourite characters in decent campaign. So, with that said, I asked the team to give me their favourite game characters and the reasoning for their choice.
Adam – Sam and Max, Freelance Police (various)
Max: “Mind if I drive?” Sam: “Not if you don’t mind me clawing at the dash and shrieking like a cheerleader.” The insane interplay between them and 1950s detective noir vibes are great. How can you not love characters where the solution to one puzzle is for Sam to dip Max in water before throwing him into a fusebox to short out a fairground ride?
Anita – Lara Croft (Tomb Raider series)
“She’s just really pretty and sexy with long hair and guns, you know?”
David – Master Li/ Sun Li (Jade Empire)
Even though I played this game over 12 years ago, this character still sticks out as a highlight. The twists and turns of this character’s development and amazing cinematics left me hooked and playing more. Master Li’s wisdom and deception was a story arc that has been done numerous times across films/tv/games but I feel that nothing has been done quite as right as this.
Jonathan – CJ (GTA: San Andreas)
“Ah sh*t here we go again.”
Kane – Link (The Legend of Zelda)
I like how consistent Link’s character has stayed even through several changes of art style and creative direction with the series.
Lucas – Ratchet & Clank (Ratchet & Clank)
They were a dynamic duo to be reckoned with!
Madeleine – Robin (Fire Emblem: Awakening)
I love that he is a character who fights to protect those he has come to care about on his journey but is also smart and knows to stay calm in tough situations.
Mahyar – Mario (Mario)
Just an epic games character with longevity and star status.
Michael – Masterchief (Halo)
For me, he’s the most iconic. He stands for justice, victory and strength. He’s a hero, an idol.
Natalie – Aku (Crash Bandicoot)
Because he’s fun!
Stefan – Nathan Drake (Uncharted)
He takes the hits and just keeps on coming. Treasure Hunter extraordinaire. I think the humour from the character during gameplay, the clips and story are all spot on. Experiencing Nathan’s human journey through the last 2 titles has been thrilling and emotional. Naughty Dog have really created a lovable and relatable character that will be long remembered well after his mantle is passed to Cassie.

Following on from Mental Health Week
World Mental Health Day was on 10th October 2019 last week and I am delighted to report that during this time it was announced that, alongside offering gambling clinics, the NHS is now able to offer treatment for young people between the ages of 13 and 25 who have been diagnosed with the mental health condition as having a Gaming Disorder.
For those not in the know; in December 2017 it was announced that a Gaming Disorder was to be classified as a mental health condition for the first time. Six months later the World Health Organisation officially accepted the proposal and listed it as a mental health disorder based on scientific evidence. The NHS is now leading the way in tackling emerging mental health conditions.
The symptoms of having a Gaming Disorder include; lack of control when gaming, prioritising gaming over other activities and, continuing to play video games even when it causes negative consequences.
