Lead Game Designer – Console Games

We are looking for a Lead Game Designer with a zeal for exploring diverse game genres and a knack for storytelling. This pivotal role requires someone capable of addressing both creative and production challenges, operating closely with the Creative/Game Director. The selected candidate will play a key role in assembling design teams and fostering collaborations. The focus will be on leadership in people management, creativity, communication, problem-solving, and risk mitigation.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Stay current with the latest gaming trends to ensure our games connect with players.
  • Plan, detail, and supervise the Game Designers on your team, guiding them to innovate gameplay that aligns with our vision.
  • Take the lead in conceptualizing characters, rules, settings, and stories for new game projects.
  • Manage the creative ideation process from pitching ideas to rapid prototyping autonomously.
  • Create detailed Game Design Documents (GDDs) for various game systems, documenting iterations and changes for development teams.

Evaluate game features to confirm they deliver engaging gameplay in line with the GDD.

  • Actively play game updates to provide constructive feedback and oversee quality assurance.
  • Implement a continuous review and iteration process, integrating user feedback into game design.
  • Collaborate closely with artists, developers, and other team members to maintain a cohesive vision.
  • Mentor and develop junior game designers, encouraging knowledge sharing and skill development.
  • Foster a game-developer mindset within the team, emphasizing both game design and technical knowledge.
  • Liaise with the Design Director to communicate progress, challenges, and solutions.
  • Work with production to gauge the design team’s capacity, aiding in the scheduling and prioritization of tasks.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Solid experience in console game development, evidenced by multiple shipped titles.
  • At least 5 years of experience in game design.
  • A thorough understanding of the industry, market trends, and target audiences.
  • Adept at leveraging KPIs to guide game design decisions.
  • Experience in prototyping and launching games, especially with Unreal Engine, and familiarity with its constraints.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Game Design principles and the gaming landscape.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and provide constructive feedback.
  • A meticulous eye for both technical and artistic details.
  • Proficiency in Excel or any scripting language for managing game design configurations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive approach.
  • Leadership qualities that encourage team collaboration and development.
  • A passionate gamer with an eye for detail.
  • An enthusiastic and quick learner.
